St Joseph’s provides a wide range of cultural opportunities for students to be involved in. These opportunities enable students to display their many talents outside of the classroom, throughout the year.
With an emphasis on fun, participation and performing, students are encouraged to join our Junior (Year 1-3) or Senior (Year 4-6) Choirs. These choirs rehearse during lunch time, performing at assemblies, school events and the end of year concert, and along with our award winning Show Choir, compete at the annual Mackay Eisteddfod.
In Term 1, our Senior Choir participate in the annual Choral Festival hosted by Kodaly Mackay, where students have the opportunity to perform alongside 400 students from schools across Mackay, conducted by reputable conductors from around Australia.
All Year 3 & 4 students participate in weekly group sessions in their year levels, learning to play a variety of classroom percussion instruments, while reading scores for both tuned and untuned percussion. These sessions are in addition to weekly classroom music lessons and gives students the opportunity to rehearse and perform in a smaller, targeted ensemble.
As a continuation of the class instrumental program, a Senior Drumming program is available during lunch time each week for students in Year 5 & 6. This rhythmic and energetic program caters for all ability levels, with activities that reinforce rhythmic listening and reading skills.
Private Piano lessons are available for students from Year 2-6 during school time, at an additional cost. Providing tailored instruction that provides an enjoyable and effective piano method, these lessons target the individual learning style and goal of each student, in both paired (40min) and individual (30min) lessons.
School musicals provide numerous opportunities for students to explore their creativity. From acting, singing and dancing to props and back stage, there's a role to suit a variety of interests.
Speech and Drama Lessons are held at St Joseph's in the hall every Monday from 3:15pm-4:15pm. Come and join the fun and learn the elements of speech and drama and communication skills, through fun and engaging activities that allow your child to build confidence!
