Our Reef Guardian Journey
The Reef Guardian Schools program has been running since 2003 and in 2023 there are in excess of 297 schools across the Great Barrier Reef Catchment involved. Our school has proudly been associated with the program since 2019.
There are two main activities hosted by Reef Guardians throughout the year – the Virtual Future Leaders Eco Challenge, to be held in Terms 1 and 2, and the Regional Networking Meetings, where our school will be able to network with other schools in the area and Reef Guardian partners who we can team up with to create some fantastic projects for the school and our local environment.
We believe that we all have a responsibility to care for our environment, particularly the reefs given our proximity to the Great Barrier Reef. As a Catholic School, stewardship of the environment is one of our key missions and we believe that education is an important component for success in this area.
In 2023, we commit to finding diverse ways to contribute positively to our environment, embedding sustainable practices and adopting school-based project to encourage participation, understanding and change of practice. This year, each class will lead sustainability projects in two key areas:
MANAGING OUR RESOURCES
What goes down the drain - (Year 3)
Waste Warriors – (Year 4)
Containers for Change – funding our sustainability initiatives (Whole school)
Lids for Kids – Electricity Saving Concepts (Year 5)
SUSTAINABLE PRACTICES
Composting our green waste and worm farming for fertiliser (Year 1)
Maintain our chicken run (Prep)
Establish a herb garden under G block (Year 2)
Paddock to plate – establishing a vegetable garden (Year 6)
